Detailed Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Danang - Hoi An

Gold Adventure – From Hoi An to Phnom Penh, an overland adventureDay 1

(morning arrival in Danang)

 

Your guide and driver will meet you at Danang airport.

From the airport it's only a short drive to Hoi An, the picturesque port formerly known as Faifo.

 

Lunch at local restaurant. Hoi An is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

 

Today you will explore Hoi An by foot with your private guide.

 

Drive the short distance to Hoi An. You will visit the Museum of History and Culture, the Tan Ky house, the Japanese bridge, the Fujian Assembly Hall and other sights of interest. Lunch will be at a local restaurant serving the delicious dish "Cao Lao".

 

Return to the hotel.

Day 2: Hoi An

Today is a free day. 

You can follow a Vietnamese cooking course, go on a bicycle trip or make an excursion to the Cham sanctuary My Son, another World Heritage site. You can also relax at Cua Dai Beach, nearby Hoi An.

Day 3: Hoi An - Kontum

Departure from Hoi An for your journey through the Central Highlands.

 

The Central Highlands is an area of fertile red soil of volcanic origin, ideal for the cultivation of rubber, coffee, tea, and soya beans, as well as rich in mineral deposits. The abundant flora and fauna are diversified. The Central Highlands is home to more than 20 different ethnic groups, mostly belonging to Mon-Khmer or Austrosian language families.   This region is sparsely populated and seldom visited by tourists.

 

Drive to Phuoc Son. Stop at Dakto which was the scene of a major battle during the Vietnam War.

Afternoon arrival in Kontum.

Day 4: Kontum

In Kontum, visit the local Vinh Son Orphanage, the old wooden Catholic Church and the former catholic seminary. This sleepy town is the capital of a region filled with ethnic groups, including Bahnar, Jarai and Sedang.  Visit some of the Bahnar villages in the vicinity of Kontum. Most significant feature of a Bahnar village is the communal house, the so-called Rong House.

Return to the hotel.

Day 5: Kontum - Banlung

Transfer to the Le Thanh/O Yadao border crossing.

At this border crossing there is no visa upon arrival service, so you need to have a valid visa for Laos from your hometown (not included)

After lunch, drive to Banlung, traveling through a part of Cambodia that's seldom visited by foreigners. There will be time for photo stops and refreshments along the way.  Upon arrival in Banlung, you'll proceed to the Terre Rouge Lodge. This lodge is the former residence of the governor of Ratanakiri and has a phenomenal lake view.

 

After settling in, visit the spectacular Cha Ong Waterfall and the Yaek Lom volcanic lake. Enjoy the sunset over the lake from the verandah of Terre Rouge Lodge.

Day 6: Banlung

Spend the full day exploring Ratanakiri Province, one the more remote provinces in Cambodia and partly inhabited by ethnic minorities such as Tampuan, Jarai, Pnong and others. The Jarai belong to the Austronesian language family. Most of them live in neighboring Dak Lak and Kontum provinces of Vietnam. The Jarai are animists and their cemeteries and funeral traditions are of particular interest.

 

Today is a long day. You'll head east, towards the border of Vietnam and stop in a few villages to have a look at the way of life of their inhabitants. Then drive north to the Se San river for an extremely scenic, 90 minute boat ride to a large Jarai village with its interesting cemetery with unique wooden statues.

You'll be back at the lodge in time for dinner and a relaxing evening.

Day 7: Banlung

Free day. You can explore Banlung on your own or go on an excursion to one of the many waterfalls around Banlung. The Yaklom volcanic lake is also worth a visit.

Day 8: Banlung - Chhlong

This morning, after breakfast, depart Banlung for Kratie via Stung Treng where you will stop to visit the Stung Treng Women's Development Center, an interesting weaving project. Stung Treng Women's Development Center (SWDC) was established in January 2001 by Mrs. Ngoun Chantha. Mrs. Chantha used to work for Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) and Partners for Development (PFD). SWDC evolved into a training and development center aimed at providing vulnerable women with basic literacy, health/nutrition and child care education.

 

This afternoon continue to Kratie stopping en route at Kam Py Pool where the rare Irrawaddy dolphins usually can be spotted. Continue to Chhlong district, about 40 kms south of Kratie.

Day 9: Chhlong - Phnom Penh

This morning, after breakfast, depart Kratie on the old, picturesque road to Kompong Cham. Along the way you will visit a  very interesting Cham village. Basket weaving is here the main livelihood. The houses of the village are on very high stilts. Continue your journey through this mainly Islamic region. You will pass many Muslim villages with colorful mosques until you reach the main road to Kompong Cham.

 

After having lunch Kompong Cham cross the Mekong River and continue to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Along the way you will visit the 12th century Angkorian temple of Wat Nokor and the twin holy mountains of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei, or Man and Woman Hill.

Continue to Phnom Penh.

Day 10: Phnom Penh

Today is a free day.

You can explore the capital of Cambodia on your own. Not to be missed are sights such as the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. Other famous sights are the Killing Fields, just outside Phnom Penh, and Tuol Sleng, the notorious former prison of the Khmer Rouge. Enjoy a stroll on the boulevard along the river.
