You will be met by your guide and driver. You will start your visit of Vietnam with a short city tour of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. After lunch in Vietnam House you will visit Cholon -  the Chinese quarter -  the Thien Hau and Giac Vien pagodas, and stroll through the immense Binh Tay Market. Continue with a visit of the Reunification Palace, the former residence of the presidents of South Vietnam, before 1975. Return to the hotel.

Today is a free day. Most people opt for an excursion the Cao Dai temple at Tay Ninh and the Cu Chi tunnels. It is also possible to explore the Mekong Delta.

Departure after breakfast. You will leave the sprawling city behind and head for Dalat, the "honeymoon capital" of Vietnam. Most part of the day you will travel through a landscape of tea and coffee plantations and you will get a first glimpse of the highland people inhabiting this area, also known as "Montagnards".

 

Dalat is located at an elevation of 1500 metres above sea level. The city used to be a favorite retreat in colonial times and boasts many old French villas and other historic buildings.

Day 4: Dalat

Today you will visit some of the most interesting sights of Dalat. You will visit the former "palace" of the last emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, Bao Dai. You will also visit the very colorful local market, stacked with fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, grown in plantations around Dalat. Thanks to its temperate climate the mountains around Dalat are ideal for growing vegetables and flowers. One of the main attractions for local tourists is the "Valley of Love", worth a visit just for the peculiar sight of Vietnamese cowboys.

 

Finally, you will make short ride on the last remaining part of the "cremailliere" railway to the village Trai Mat. This unique cog railway used to run all the way to Thap Cham on the coast.

Day 5: Dalat - Lak Lake

Early departure from Dalat. Today you will travel to the Central Highlands of Vietnam, "Tay Nguyen" in Vietnamese. This area consists of the provinces Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Kontum. Tay Nguyen is not part of the beaten tourist track. This region is home to a variety of ethnic minorities such as Jarai, Ede, M'nong, Bahnar and Sedang. Most of these groups belong to the Mon-Khmer language group. During the coming days you will visit some of their villages and learn about their interesting culture and traditions. Nearly all minority groups living in the central highlands are indigenous people.

 

Today you will stop at a silkworm farm and a place where chopsticks are being produced. You will have lunch at a local restaurant.

 

In the afternoon you will arrive at Lak Lake, a beautiful and tranquil place surrounded by forested mountains. Tonight you will have dinner and overnight in a long house in the M'nong village Jun.

Day 6: Lak Lake - Kontum

After breakfast we will drive to Buon Ma Thuot, the capital of Dak Lak Province. The Central Highlands of Vietnam are a major coffee producing area. Did you know that Vietnam has surpassed Brazil as the biggest coffee exporting country in the world?

 

The Central Highlands, Tay Nguyen in Vietnamese, have been the scene of some major battles during the Vietnam war. Along the way today you will visit the ethnic Museum in Buon Ma Thuot as well as several villages and a coffee plantation. You will pass the city Pleiku on the way to Kontum.

Day 7: Kontum

Kontum is a small town with some interesting places to visit. Today you will explore the Kontum by foot. You will visit some of the Bahnar villages located on the edge of town. The most distinctive aspect of a Bahnar village is its rong or communal house, the roof of which may be up to 30m high and slightly curved. The rong is the centre of village cultural and ceremonial life, and also the home of adolescent boys, who are taught Bahnar history, the skills of hunting and other manly matters.

 

You will also visit the old seminary of Kontum, built more than 80 years ago. Certainly interesting also is the wooden church. Next to it is an example of a rong house.

Finally you will visit the market, always an interesting place to visit.

Day 8: Kontum - Phuoc Son

Today you will travel on a recently upgraded road through the Truong Son Mountains. You will pass Dakto, the scene of a major battle in 1967. Visit the small museum. Continue to Phuoc Son.

The road will pass through jungle, mountain scenery. Today there will be plenty of time to stop at one of the waterfalls and visit some of the villages.

Day 9: Phuoc Son - Hoi An

Drive to Hoi An where you will arrive in the afternoon.

Hoi An, formerly known as Faifo, is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Hoi An has been declared a  UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The town is located along theThu Bon River, 30 km south of Danang.

Day 10: Hoi An

Today is a free day.  You can explore Hoi An easily on foot and visit sights as the Tan Ky House and the Japanese Bridge on your own.

 

You can also follow a Vietnamese cooking course, go on a bicycle trip or make an excursion to the Cham sanctuary My Son, another World Heritage site. You can also relax at Cua Dai Beach, nearby Hoi An.
