Day 3: Siem Reap

Gold Exclusive Explore - The Khmer ExperienceDay 3

This morning before sunrise, depart the hotel for Angkor Wat, the largest and most breathtaking monument at Angkor. Built as the funerary temple for Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1112 to 1152, Angkor never fails to reward the first time or repeat visitor with its grand scale, surreal bas reliefs and unbelievable attention to detail. Here, you will spend the morning exploring one of man's most magnificent creations before returning to the hotel for a late breakfast and some free time to wait out the hot midday sun.

Lunch at the FCC Angkor.

Later this afternoon, continue to Bantrey Srei, which for many years was off limits due to its remote location and Khmer Rouge activity. Built in the late 10th century and dedicated to Shiva, Bantrey Srei's pink limestone walls contain the best bas reliefs of any temple at Angkor.

If you are interested, you may to choose to visit the Cambodian Landmine Museum, Prevention and Rehabilitation Center. It is estimated that more than 110 million land mines are buried throughout the world. Buried within Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Kuwait and Cambodia are the largest concentrations of land mines. In Cambodia, efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and the major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people. Learn about the center's efforts and work on this visit.

Return to Siem Reap early this  and the rest of the day is free at your leisure.

Day 4: Siem Reap

Gold Exclusive Explore - The Khmer ExperienceDay 4

After an early breakfast, meet your guide and depart on the full day excursion out of town to the remote ruins of Koh Ker, Beng Mealea and Tonle Sap Lake. For a short period, the capital of the Khmer kingdom was moved to Koh Ker, about 100 kilometers north of Angkor. The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30-meter-tall temple mountain rising high above the plain and the surrounding forest. Great views await the visitor at the end of an adventurous climb.

Continue to Beng Mealea, another seldom-visited ruin and a spectacular jungle temple. Almost no restoration of the area has been undertaken so the jungle is becoming one with the carved sandstone. Roots of kapok trees twist and wind their way around the carvings and gray galleries. Intricately carved depictions have been well preserved, including scenes from the sacred Hindu Vedas, such the bird-god Garuda giving birth to Vishnu, the god who preserves all things.

Picnic lunch from the La Residence d’Angkor.

This afternoon, return to Siem Reap, stopping to explore Tonle Sap, Cambodia's Great Lake. Along with the Mekong River, this is Cambodia's dominant geographical feature, swelling in size from 1,860 square miles to over 4,500 during the rainy season. Tonle Sap is one of the world's richest sources of freshwater fish and provides a livelihood for approximately 40 percent of Cambodia's people and 60 percent of the country's fish protein. It offers a window into the little-changing traditional life of the Khmer people. Spend a couple of hours exploring by boat around the northwest tip of the lake and view its stilted villages. In particular, visit Kampong Khleang, the lake's largest community.

Day 5: Siem Reap

Gold Exclusive Explore - The Khmer ExperienceDay 5
Following an early breakfast, visit Ta Phrom in the soft morning light when there aren't too many other visitors. Built in 1186 and dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII, Ta Phrom is a temple of towers, closed courtyards and narrow corridors. Unlike the other temples of Angkor, Ta Phrom has been left to the elements and looks very much like the other temples must have looked when "rediscovered" by Henri Mouhot in the 1860s.

Later visit the newly opened National Museum followed by Siem Reap's Central Market and very small French Quarter.

Afterwards, visit the workshop and silk worm breeding farm of Les Artisans d'Angkor. This is a network of Cambodian craftsmen and women sponsored by the Cambodian government and "REPLIC," a European program. The purpose is to educate young Cambodians in skilled crafts and provide them with a livelihood by marketing their products. This visit allows for an insight into present day Cambodia.

Late this afternoon, return to Siem Reap and walk up Phnom Bakheng for a sunset view of Angkor Wat and the surrounding areas. This view provides a wonderful overview of the entire area.

Gold Exclusive Explore - The Khmer ExperienceDay 6
After breakfast at the hotel, you'll check-out and then depart the city on a wonderful drive into the traditional Cambodian countryside.  The improvement of the roads and infrastructure as well as enhancement of safety are now opening up beautiful parts of the country that were largely inaccessible even a couple years ago.

You'll then continue your drive through some really beautiful and unspoiled countryside to the village of Kompong Kdei. Near here you'll view two bridges from the Angkor period that are still used for traffic to this day; one of them over 180 ft. long and a marvel of ancient engineering and construction.

From here you'll continue on to the town of Kompong Thom where you'll spend the night at a rustic but charming, boutique hotel. All rooms are air conditioned and have private bathrooms with hot and cold water. The property also fronts the Stung Seng River and has a lovely, free form saltwater pool.

Settle in and enjoy dinner at the hotel and a relaxing evening.

Following breakfast depart Kompong Thom on the three hour drive through the heart of Cambodia to Phnom Penh.  Stop briefly at Skuon where the local specialty is fried spiders sold on the roadside.

This afternoon, you'll reach Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Phnom Penh is a city that is rediscovering itself. Once considered the loveliest of the French-built cities of Indochina, its charm, while diminished, has managed to survive the violence of its recent history and the present invasion of property speculators.

Lunch at Friend Restaurant.

After getting settled at the hotel enjoy a cyclo tour of Phnom Penh's colorful waterfront and French Quarter. Finish the day with a sunset boat trip on the Mekong River, viewing local life and the glittering spires of the National Museum in the distance. Day 9: Phnom Penh

Gold Exclusive Explore - The Khmer ExperienceDay 9

After breakfast, meet your private guide to begin your exploration of the city. Phnom Penh is a city that is rediscovering itself. Once considered the loveliest of the French built cities of Indochina, its charm, while diminished, has managed to survive the violence of its recent history and the present invasion of property speculators.

First visit the Russian and Central Markets. Enjoy exploring these markets where everything imaginable is for sale. Then take a traditional cyclo tour through the heart of Phnom Penh. Car sightseeing to the holy site of Wat Phnom where a 26th-century stupa and a small pagoda stand. Continue along the riverside promenade, stopping at the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Although some 60% of the pagoda's contents were destroyed under Pol Pot, what remains is spectacular. This is one of the best places in all of Cambodia where objects embodying the brilliance of the Khmer civilization can still be viewed. Visit the National Museum and examine its huge collection of Khmer sculpture and artifacts recovered from Angkor.

Lunch at Khmer Surin Restaurant.

After lunch, visit Choeng Ek, the location of the infamous Killing Fields. If interested, visit the Tuol Sleng Prison, housed in a high school, to glimpse the devastating horrors that prevailed during Cambodia's ultra-radical Marxist movement. This excursion may prove distressing for some. It is, however, an important piece of this country's history.

Return to the hotel late this afternoon with the remainder of the evening at your leisure.
