Lotus - Laos - Cambodia ExplorerDay 1

Arrival in Bangkok with your international flight (TBA).  Continue your flight to Ubon Ratchathani.


Fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani with Thai Airways.
Arrival in Ubon Ratchathani, transfer from Ubon airport to Laos border (appr. 1 hour).  After having completed immigration and customs procedures at both the Thai and Lao sides, meet your private guide and driver at the Lao Immigration office.

Welcome to Laos, Sabaidee! First destination will be Pakse, the biggest town in Southern Laos. Visit the huge, interesting local market.  Continue to the Boloven Plateau.

In the afternoon, we will arrive at Tad Fane Resort where we will spend two nights. From the Tad Fane Resort you have a dramatic view over the Tad Fane Waterfalls, thundering down a 200-meter deep gorge! The waterfalls are part of Dong Hua Sao National Park, one of 18 protected area in Laos.

Today's program includes a full day walk to villages and waterfalls around the Tad Fane Resort. The Boloven Plateau is around 1000 metres elevation. Temperatures are mild year round. The climate is ideal for growing coffee and tea and, apart from the Tad Fane waterfall, there are numerous other small and big waterfalls in the immediate vicinity of the resort.

In the evening, you can enjoy a glass of wine around the fireplace in the Resort.

After a delightful stay on the Boloven plateau you will continue to Sipandone. First stop will be at the Khmer temple Wat Phou along the way. You will have to cross the Mekong by ferry to reach this beautiful ruin. Wat Phou was built in the 5th century and predates Angkor Wat in Cambodia. In 2002, Wat Phou was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

After lunch you will continue south, towards the Cambodian border. Our final destination today is Don Khong, Khong Island.

Khong Island is the biggest of the 4000 islands that dot the Mekong River in this area, which is also called Siphandone (4000 islands). Before arrival on Khong Island we visit the thundering Khone Phapeng Waterfall, really an awesome sight.

Khong Island must be one of the most relaxed places in Laos.
Today you will explore Siphandone by boat and enjoy the beauty of this area to the fullest. We will make a boat trip to the islands Don Det and Don Khone. On Don Khone we will walk to the Lipi Waterfall also known as Tad Somphamit.

The French built a railwayline of 14 kms on Don Khone in order to bypass the rapids so that the Mekong could be used as a waterway to transport goods. You can still see an old French locomotive as a silent witness of this failed endeavor.

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the border. You will need to have a visa for Cambodia (see our visa section for more details).

Your Cambodian guide will wait for you at the border and welcome you to Cambodia: Sooasday!
After having completed immigration and customs formalities you will travel by small, local boat to Stung Treng on a beautiful and wild stretch of the Mekong River.

Disembark in Stung Treng.  Drive to Kratie. Along the way you will stop at the Kampi Pool where you can spot the rare Irrawaddy Dolphin. Most of the animal large body will be under waterlevel though. Continue to Kratie, a very pleasant riverine town.

Day 6: Kratie - Phnom Penh

Today, you will be driven to Phnom Penh. In the morning you will take a local ferry to Koh Trung, an island in the Mekong River. You will make a walk on the island and will experience how daily life is along the Mekong River. Return by ferry and start the drive to Phnom Penh.

After lunch at Kompong Cham (on own) you will visit the 12th century Angkorian temple of Wat Nokor and the twin holy mountains of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei, or Man and Woman Hill.

You will make a short stop at the village Skuon where the local speciality is deep-fried spiders!  Continue to Phnom Penh.

Day 7: Phnom Penh

Morning visit of Choeng Ek, the location of the infamous Killing Fields. Continue to Tuol Sleng prison, the notorious Khmer prison where thousands of Cambodians perished in the darkest hours of Cambodian history. Lunch at Khmer Surin restaurant.

Afternoon free at leisure.

Day 8: Phnom Penh

Early departure from Phnom Penh. Your guide will pick up from the hotel.
Transfer from Phnom Penh to Andong Teuk, where you will take a local boat to Chi Phat. The boattrip takes around 1,5 hours. Picnic lunch on the boat.
After arrival in Chi Phat you will check into your guesthouse and visit the CBET information centre. After this there is time for relaxation. We will walk to the nearby Chhay Chrey rapids where we can have a refreshing swim before dinner at the CBET restaurant.

If you want there is the option to witness sunset at the Phnom Tro Ngoul.
Early sleep tonight. In Chi Phat there is only electricity until 10 PM.

Day 9: Phnom Penh

After an early rise you will have breakfast at the CBET restaurant. After this you will depart for your full day mountain bike ride to a very interesting archeological site with burial jars and coffins.

 

The site is one of very few such sites in the Cardamoms and the only one known to have wooden coffins. It is said to be from minority tribes called by today local villagers the Khmer Lue (mountain tribes) who lived in the Cardamoms during the late Angkorian era. The Jars are estimated to be 300 -400 years old. The trail is a scenic trail that crosses jungle, rivers and streams in a low mountain area (elevation up to 364m) that is also an elephant crossing area. We will have lunch at a nice riverside location. After lunch we cycle the same way back. Along the way we will stop at the Teuk Vet waterfall and the O'Spott bat cave and waterfall.


You willl arrive back in Chi Phat after a hard day riding for a well deserved dinner and another night in the guesthouse.

After breakfast we will travel back to Andong Teuk where our bus will be waiting to transfer us to Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville (aka Kompong Som) is the prime beach destination in Cambodia.

Free day. Today it is possible to take the day off, relax on the beach or at the swimming pool of the hotel. It is also possible to go on a boat trip to some of the offshore islands (when the weather allows).

After breakfast you will drive to Siem Reap. This will take the whole day. First drive to Phnom Penh. Lunch will be along the way.

Day 13: Siem Reap

After breakfast at the hotel embark on a full day exploration of the ruins of Angkor.
Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century.
They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging program to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

This morning, you visit to the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the temples of Bayon, Baphoun, Phimean Akas, The Royal Enclosure and the Terrace of Elephant and Leper King.

Then continue to visit the temple of Ta Prohm. Ta Prohm is extensively ruined, but you can still explore numerous towers, close courtyards and narrow corridors, discovering hidden gems of stone reliefs beneath the encroaching foliage. Many of the corridors are impossible, thanks to the jumbled piles of carved stone blocks that clog their interiors
 
Enjoy a picnic lunch.
 
The whole afternoon is set aside for a visit to the main temple, Angkor Wat, Angkor Wat, one of the most beautiful and carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat are masterpieces of the human beings in the whole world.
 
Finish your day with the sunset on the top of Bakheng Hill. Return to the hotel.
