Vietnam Airlines offically joined SkyTeam11 June 2010Vietnam Airlines officially joined the SkyTeam global airline alliance at a ceremony in Hanoi yesterday. The national carrier becomes the alliance’s first Southeast Asian member, and brings a global network of 884 destinations in 169 countries to Vietnam
Airlines’ customers. Members of the airline’s frequent flyer programme can also now accrue points when traveling on the flights of other SkyTeam member airlines. As part of the joining ceremony, attended by Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, senior government offi cials and representatives from SkyTeam member airlines, Vietnam Airlines unveiled its first aircraft in SkyTeam livery to commemorate its membership in the alliance. “We are proud to welcome the fi rst carrier from Southeast
Asia in our midst today,” said Leo M.van Wijk, Chairman of the SkyTeam Governing Board. “Asia is a very important and strategic growth market for SkyTeam and we are well on track to strengthen our network offering in this part of the world. By adding
20 unique destinations to the SkyTeam network, the joining of Vietnam Airlines marks an important step in this
direction.” With the addition of Vietnam Airlines, SkyTeam carriers now offer over 13,000 daily fl ights to approximately 393
million passengers worldwide. The alliance’s other member airlines include Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, China Southern Airlines and Korean Air.
